Pterois volitans is commonly known as the Red Lionfish and a frequently-sighted species that occurs across the Indo-Pacific region, as well as further afield as an introduced/invasive species in seas around the New World. Its venomous spines are used in defence of predators, and its attractive appearance make it popular with underwater photographers. Some individuals are very dark in colour, and appear to be a different species.
